A Known Donor.
A Thoughtful Connection.
GENETICOUTURE is Joao Prata's personal parenthood profile for intended parents and fertility professionals considering a transparent, mutually chosen, clinic-managed known donor arrangement.
Meet Joao
I am a Portuguese designer, inventor and entrepreneur based near Lisbon. My work spans product design, technology, culture and independent research. I speak five languages, and I am exploring known donation because I would like to help create a family through an arrangement built on honesty, mutual choice and respect for the future child.
A Thoughtful Path
Every situation is different. This is a possible pathway for getting to know one another and, only if there is mutual agreement, involving the appropriate clinic, counsellors and independent legal advisers.
Known, not anonymous. Mutual choice from the beginning. Clinic-managed treatment only. Honest medical and family-history disclosure. Independent counselling and legal guidance. Openness shaped around the future child. Clear boundaries, thoughtfully discussed. No promises of outcomes—only transparency and care.
Compatibility & Shared Expectations
The right arrangement is not based on a transaction. It begins with shared values, realistic expectations and careful consideration of the future child.
A Stable, Supported Home
A caring environment with emotional, practical and financial stability—and people the child can rely on beyond the immediate household.
Openness From the Start
A commitment to age-appropriate truth about the child's origins, without secrecy or shame.
Clear, Respectful Boundaries
The intended parents are the parents. Any donor connection remains limited, agreed and responsive to the child's needs.
What Mutual Compatibility Means
I will not be the right donor for every family, and every family will not be right for me. Both sides should be free to ask difficult questions, take time and decline without pressure. Compatibility includes values, communication, support network, approach to openness, and expectations for future contact—not wealth, status or a promise of genetic outcomes.
Known From the Beginning
Being known is not the same as being a parent. My hope is that a child can grow up with an honest, age-appropriate understanding of where they came from, without secrecy or confusion.
The intended parents would be the parents. I would not seek custody, authority or a co-parenting role. I would hope for a limited connection—perhaps occasional updates, a birthday or Christmas message, and, if everyone feels comfortable, an occasional meeting as the child grows.
No website can prescribe a future relationship. Parents' judgement, professional guidance, changing circumstances and the child's own voice must shape what is appropriate over time.
“Known and respectful—present in a small way, never replacing the parents.”
— Joao Prata
